United Nations Executive Agencies Honor Midea Driving the Implementation of the Kigali Amendment
Meeting for the first time since the entry into force of the Kigali Amendment-the forty-first meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (OEWG 41) is held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 1st to 5th, 2019, and will address a number of issues such as linkages between hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in transitioning to low global warming potential (GWP) alternatives. GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., Ltd has become one of the key enterprises in the air-conditioning industry that provides alternative technology support for the conference because of its outstanding achievements in environmentally friendly refrigerant alternative technology.
The air-conditioning industry will face the challenges of improving energy efficiency and phasing down high-GWP refrigerants simultaneously during the implementation of the Kigali Amendment. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Economic and Technical Committee (TEAP) established Task Force expert group to assess the feasibility and cost of current and future low GWP refrigerant applications and energy efficiency improvements.
GD Midea Air-Conditioning Equipment Co., Ltd has continuously invested in the application of R290 environmentally friendly refrigerant in household air conditioners for 10 years, and successfully obtained the world's first “Blue Angel” certification, which is one of the most authoritative certifications considering energy efficiency and environmental friendly of air conditioner products.
At the same time, Midea has successfully developed high-efficiency R290 inverter air conditioners. Since its installation in Jiaxing Nanyang Polytechnic Institute in 2016, Midea R290 split air conditioner has successfully been sold more than 60,000 sets in China, and more than 100,000 sets of R290 mobile air conditioners have been put into the European market, which truly realized the marketization of “efficient, environmentally friendly and safe” air conditioners.
The R290 alternative technology is the only technical solution for the current residential air conditioning sector that can fully applicable to the Kigali Amendment. Its successful commercialization will greatly enhance the contribution of the air conditioning industry to global environmental protection.
Due to the rigorous safety standards, components and system design and production complexity, whether the R290 air conditioner can be successfully developed and marketed has always been one of the focus to Montreal Protocol parties. Therefore, the successful experience of R290 air-conditioning in Midea has become an important case and technical support in the Task Force report. It has received wide attention from all countries in this OWG meeting and greatly encouraged the confidence of the parties in implementing the Kigali amendment in the future.
